Jerusalem

In 2010, I moved my studio temporarily into a former brothel in Archer Street. Opposite was my son's restaurant, Bocca di Lupo. "Jerusalem" was on at the Apollo Theatre next door. I wrote Mark Rylance a note, asking if I could paint his portrait. He agreed and arranged for me to paint the rest of the cast too. During the last few weeks of that production's run, I painted them all as they waited for their cues to go on stage, in the Apollo's green room, deep under the theatre. These were minutes full of an intense mutual complicity, for which I am ever grateful to Mark Rylance and to every member of "Jerusalem".
